November

Hello Parents,

This month a constable came to visit our class. He read a book about anger, and the students brainstormed ideas about what they could do to calm down when they became angry. The students came up with some fantastic strategies.

The students will be bringing home a Reading log book. Everytime they read a book, they will write it down in their book. This year, we are able to access virtual books via RAZ A-Z. More information to come.

In French, we have been going over various beginning sounds and have begun working on double sounds.  In French and Science, we are presently learning new vocabulary related to animals. We have also been reading a story called "Au zoo de Calgary". Soon, the students will bring this home to read with you.

In Math, we have been working on sorting, 5 frames and counting. We are learning how to count on and back.

I look forward to seeing you all at interviews.

Dear Parents,

The students have been learning Halloween vocabulary in French. They have been singing songs about Halloween and learning a few Halloween poems. We have been working on Halloween Math centers to review patterns and to work on number sense.

We continue to work on our sounds in French. Among many new sounds we learned, OU was a favorite as this is the sound ghosts make. The students enjoyed making this sound.

We are reading stories about Halloween. In English, the students enjoyed the story about 'Green Witch'.You may have read the student copy that was sent home. In French, the students are working on a reading about Halloween.

In Religion, we are talking about Noah's Ark.

In Science, the students enjoyed a science experiment called 'walking on water'. We made secondary colors using water and food coloring.

In Social Studies, we are talking about groups.

In art, the students drew leaves and painted them. Tomorrow we will be making skeletons.

The students are preparing to sing for our Remembrance Day liturgy.

If you have any questions please let me know.

Dear Parents,

The purpose of my Blog is to let parents know what we have been working on. As you know we had a PJ party on Thursday. In French, the students had to tell the class what color the stuffy was, and whether it was big or small. Suprisingly, we actually covered a lot of French words on PJ day.

Next Week the students are to bring a show and tell item to school which they will describe to the class in French. The students are asked not to play with the toys in the class and bring them only for the show and tell.

In class, we talked about tattling, personl space and blurting out. We continue to read the book" My Mouth is a Volcano" to encourage students to raise their hand. Another great book is " Personal Space Camp". This book encourages students to keep their hands to themselves.

We have also talked about Quiet turtles, whispering whales and chatty chickens. Chatty chickens are almost never allowed in the school only whispering whales and quiet turtles. Sometimes the students are given little stuffy turtles if they are listening well. However, one went missing, maybe someone accidentally brought it home. If you see a litte turtle in your home, pleae return it. Thanks :} :}

In French, we are working on sounding out letters. We have started with the vowels a e i o u. In our program, all our sounds come with pictures to help students remember the sounds. Most students are catching on well. Most still have trouble with the u.

We continue working on vocabulary for school and colors. Please visit the following site if you would like to get more information on what we will be learning this coming week. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2JwURExB9A&t=305sWe are learning sight words in French. If you would like to review sight words please visit the following sight on Youtube.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wrfdDf4GAM&t=34s  The title is grade 1 sight words in French with pronunciation.

In Science, the students participated in a color experiment. They mixed yellow water with food coloring and red water with food coloring. Of course, they discovered it made orange.

In English, we are working on sight words such as do, play, I am, me etc... We play smartboard games to learn these words. We will soon begin learning English letter sounds.

In Math, we are still working on patterns, learning numbers, and subsitizing. (looking at dots or ten frames and saying the number) The students could continue practicing this

If you have any questions please email me or call me.

Hello Parents,

I can't believe two weeks have already gone by. For now, we have 23 students in our class. We have 3 new student joining us this year. We welcome these new students to our school. We are so fortunate to have them with us.

We are presently working on routines and more routines.... In addition to this, we are working on vocabulary pertaining to colors and school, the alphabet and their beginning sounds in French, printing skills etc..

If their are any parents willing to make playdoh for the class please let me know. I can provide zip-lock bags. It would be great if each student could have a bag of their own.

Please ensure your child is getting a good sleep as the days can be long for the children. Sometimes behaviour issues can result from just not getting enough sleep.

If you would like to make an appointment please let the office know or email me at celine.danis @cssd.ab.ca and we can meet after school. I would prefer meeting in the afternoon than in the morning. Thank you in advance for contacting me before coming to the grade 1 classroom to meet.

If you have something to drop off to the student, please do not come to the grade 1 classroom during school hours, but kindly drop the item off at the office or have the office phone me if you need to see the student during school hours.

I look forward to meeting with you at the parent-teacher interviews. I look forward to knowing more about your child and their needs.

Bienvenue en première année!

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year. I am looking forward to working in cooperation with you, the parents. Your dedication, collaboration, encouragement and continued support are greatly appreciated.

As the school year begins, there are some important details that we would like to share with you to help us work together in guiding your child through his/her first year of school.

Agendas: Agendas will be sent home every evening and returned every morning. We ask that you please sign your child’s agenda each night. Feel free to use the agenda as a way of communication as they will be checked every morning. If you have a message to pass along, the agenda works best, or you can email me at address listed below.

Volunteering: we will need 4 volunteers to help walk the students to church and to sit near them. Please let me know if you can.

Blog: Please refer to the St.Gerard website to view my blog. I will communicate approximately every 10 days beginning in a few weeks.  I will notify you when a post is submitted.

Homework: Although there is no homework per se, literacy is highly valued and it is strongly encouraged that you child reads a minimum of 10 minutes every night. A reading program will be put into place whereby your child will be able to bring home books from school, however for now it is simply encouraged to continue working on sounds and beginning reading skills developed in class.

For complete curriculum descriptions, please visit the Alberta Education website that provides a number of helpful and comprehensive documents for parents. http://education.alberta.ca/parents/resources/handbook.aspx

I look forward to meeting you!

Dear Parents,

Thank you to all the volunteers!

Teacher's Pet, an in class field trip, came to our class today. The students enjoyed building an animal enclosure. Each enclosure needed a bed, food, water, shelter, toys and a fenced area. Your child will bring the enclosure home this week.

In Science, we made wind vanes and tested them outside. The students were asked to test them at home as well.

As part of our unit 'building things', the students made a car with recycled materials. This coming week,  the student's will be making chairs and tables. The students are to bring recycled materials to make these items.

In Math, we are working on adding and subtracting numbers to 20, grouping 10's to make 100.

Dear Parents,

We had a fantastic day at Telus Spark. The grade 1’s enjoyed riding the bus with the grade 2’s and 3’s. Upon their arrival, the students spent some time in the Creative Museum until our session began. During our session, the students discovered the urban natural world at Telus Spark’s backyard outdoor classroom. The students learned about animal adaptations and the environment through several games. The highlight of the activity, according to them, was playing Coyote tag.

The students burned some energy while playing at Telus Spark’s playground called Brainaisium. This is no ordinary playground. The students were drawn towards the 63 foot slide. Before going down, the students needed to climb a rope style tower.

After eating lunch in the cafeteria, the students explored the many exhibits at the Science Center and especially enjoyed the bed of nails. At the end of the day, most of the grade 1 students attended a free science demo called FIRE in one of Telus Spark’s many theatres.

I still need parent volunteers for the in-class field trip on May 25th at 1:00 p.m. Please let me know if you can volunteer.

The next T-Pet Field trip is on May 25th at 1:00. We will need 4 volunteers.

Our Telus Spark field trip is on May 16th.

Tomorrow, Friday, the students who are interested in qualifying for the Gala Oratoire will present their poem "Mon Chat" and again early next week. By Thursday, we will choose 2 students to represent our school.  The Gala will take place on a Saturday at the end of the month.

Please make sure your child's library books are in their backpacks. I've asked the students to put them there each dayeverytime they read them.

Dear Parents,

Please join us for our dance performance on Friday at 11:05.

An Occupational Therapist will be visiting our class often to talk about social skills. She came this week to our class to teach the students about listening skills,

This week, Constable Don Johnson will come to our class to talk about building positive relationships and creating safe communities.

In May, we will be having two in school field trip presentations by Teachers Pet. The first one will be on May 3rd and the second will be on May 25th. Both of the sessions are at 1:00 p.m. We will need 4 volunteers for each presentation. Please let me know if you can volunteer on either of those days.

We have our 3 volunteers for the field trip to Telus Spark on May 16th. I would appreciate having more parent volunteers. Unfortunately, you will have to pay your own admission fee.

The students painted lovely flowers using watercolors. They are hanging on the wall. outside the class.

We have one more group presenting 'Boucle D'Or' this Friday. The last group did an amazing job!

In Math, we are working on geometrie. We have been making tangrams.

In Science, we have all planted seeds, and we are waiting patiently for signs of growth.  As a class, we planted carrots, onions and radishes. These ar starting to grow now. The students found worms outside and put them in.

We gathered wet soil outside and observed the soil with a magnifying glass.

Sunday, April 9, 2017

Dear Parents,

This Thursday, the first group of actors performed 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears'. The students did an amazing job! Our next group will be performing on Friday, April 21 at 2:45. Please note the change in time from 2:30 to 2:45. The last group will perform on Friday, April 28th at 2:45. Parents will receive a note in their child's agenda.

The students demonstrated how kind they could be to each other over the last few weeks. Therefore, they were rewarded with a small P.J party on Friday.

The students have brought home little stuffies and their notebooks. The students are to write in English what their little stuffy is doing at that momment. They can keep the stuffies at home for 1-2 weeks as they wish.

We have been disecting flowers in Science, planting vegetable seeds, and experimenting with putting food coloring in water to see if the flower petals would show that color. We have wrapped seeds in paper towels and are observing them over the course of the next 2 weeks.

For the month of of April and possibly May, I will send home a home reading booklet. This booklet has several readings in French. Each day, we will review a reading, and I encourage students to re-read these reading at home daily. We will then, review them once more in class the following day. Please have the students return the booklets daily. Parents are to sign at the top of the page if their child has read to them. The students are encouraged to continue bringing the reading books from class as well.

Please remember to return all French readers as soon as your child has finished reading them. Let me know if you want your chil to bring more readers home to practice.

In Religion, the students have been going over the Easter story. They will perform a mini-skit of the story to their peers.

We have 2 in-class field trips coming up soon. I will discuss this in the next blog.

We are working on a special Easter gift to bring home.

Field Trip to Telus Spark

Dear Parents,

On May 16th, the students will be going on a field trip to the Telus Spark Science Center. The bus will be leaving at 9:00 a.m from the school and returning to school at 2:30 p.m. We will need 3 volunteers to go on the bus with us. Please let me know if you are interested as soon as possible. Any other parents wishing to volunteer can drive to Telus Spark by car and pay for their admission separately. The students will be divided into groups and will be exploring the Center most of the day. Therefore, I would appreciate having two volunteers per group.

We are still working on our play. Since I am very busy trying to cover the curriculum, we have little time to practice. The students are divided into groups. Each group has a narrator, a Goldilocks and three bears. Once I feel a group is ready to put on the play, I will notify that particular group of parents and invite them to watch their children. The plays will most likely be on Friday afternoon. I am encouraging students to memorize their lines (except for narrators). I have one group that is almost ready to perform after Spring break.

This week, I will talk to the students about 'what it is to be a good friend'. For the month of April, we will be looking out for students who are being kind to others, who are making an effort to include others, are treating others with respect, are being respectful in class, not being bossy, being assertive, but kind, using their words to resolve conflicts, sharing, welcoming others, playing with different friends, and partnering with kids they don't usually partner up with in class. Everytime we catch someone doing this, their name will be added to the friendship bucket. Once we have 100 names, the students will be rewarded with a pajama party in class.

The students did a great job on their animal projects. I am very proud of them all. I mispelled the word ARCTIC on the project description..sorry.

Sincerely,

Mme Celine

Dear Parents,

Thank you for contributing to the treasure box. Our box is starting to fill up and the students have been speaking more French and reading more books! The treasure box is always a great incentive to get students to speak more French.

Thank you for sending recycled materials to school with your children. The students are very excited about making instruments. Many students made their instruments look like real instruments by adding colored paper, paint and strings etc..They are welcome to bring in materials on Friday. Monday will be the last day.

By Monday, all the students should have completed their instruments and will have a chance to play them during music class.

Lately, we have been talking about our favorite winter activities. Therefore the students chose the sport they enjoyed and made this out of paper. Some had created skating rinks with hockey players and figure skaters, and others made people doing luge or skiing.

We have finally started to practice our play. In the next week, the students will be given their parts and I will send home their lines to practice. It can be included as one of the readings in the reading program log book.

Library day is on Monday.

 Hello Parents,

I just want to say how fortunate I am to be teaching your children. They are truly a wonderful group!

The students are so excited about doing in-line skating! Please have your children bring a helmet if they have one. Thank you to all the parent volunteers who offered to volunteer this week.

Just a reminder that Friday is a PD day. There is no school.

DONATIONS

In order to continue to encourage students to read, we will have a treasure box of little toys etc...for anyone who reads 10 or more books. At least 6 in French and 4 in English. This worked well last year and it really motivated students to read!

If anyone would like to donate to the treasure box for the next few months, it would be appreciated. If we receive enough toys, school supplies etc.. for the box, we will use it as an additional incentive to motivate students and reward them for reading.

FRENCH

If a student speaks to me in French they receive a sticker. I'm always encouraging the students to speak to me in French. This seems to be working well so far for most of the students.

We will make posters, and prepare for our presentations about our favorite winter activity. Some students have already prepared their presentations at home, but I will also be giving time in class as well.

Sometime in late February or early March, the students will be presenting the play Goldilocks and the Three Bears in French. All of the students will be participating and parents are welcome to attend. We will begin to study this play in the coming week. The students are encouraged to memorize their lines.

ALLERGIES

Just a friendly reminder that we have a student with a severe peanut allergy.

LIBRARY

Library is on Thursday.

SCIENCE

We are talking about the seasons and we are completing our unit on Senses.

MATH

We continue to work on the same areas mentioned in the last posting. You will receive feedback on your child's progress in these areas in a few weeks.

Thank you,

Mme Celine

Dear Parents,

I would like to welcome our two new students Celina and Molly to our Grade 1 class. We now have 19 students in our class. We are so happy to have them join us.

The students have received a form for in-line skating. If you have not received it, please let me know. Please send it with your child this week. Thank you.

For the first week back, in addition to keeping our desks organized, we have been working on keeping our lockers neat and tidy. Each morning a student walks down the hallway to see if any items are lying on the floor. After snack and after lunch, the students are asked to check their own lockers to see if their lunch boxes are put neatly in their back packs. Each student has a poster in their locker entitled" Do I Have Everything". The students are asked to review the poster at the end of each day to see if they have all of their belongings with them and nothing is left in their lockers.

ELA
We reviewed and learned new English sounds and reviewed some sight words. We are using a program called 'Lively Letters'. Each letter sound has a story to go with it. We are working on our phonics booklets, and some English sight words.

FLA
In French, we will be learning new sounds. Each letter sound or group of sounds has a story.
To practice vocabulary for body parts, the students are labeling different parts of their paper human body. They will bring this home soon.

We talked about parts of a sentence (ie: subject, verb etc...) and we all made silly sentences to practice what we have learned.

We made a story with actions about what activities we do in the winter. The students composed their own stories about what they do in winter using their winter vocabulary words.

At the end of the month, the students will be presenting their 'Show and Tell' for the month of January. The topic is
January
J’aime la neige!
(My favourite snow activity)
 January  24th - A-F
January 25th-G-M
January 26th-30th-N-Z

RELIGION
We read two Bible stories: The Wedding at Cana and the Prodigal Son.

MATH
We are learning addition sentence math problems. Using centers we worked on counting by 2's, 5's and 10's, reading number words, identifying even and odd numbers, identifying numbers at a glance, addition with doubles and we continue working on simple addition equations. This week we will focus on identifying numbers 30-40.

MUSIC
We are singing the song 'C'est L'hiver' and we will be going over several songs this week.
